Farming- A ‘Game’ of Numbers

To benefit from farming, a farmer needs to do the mathematics of a particular value chain they wish to undertake. This includes proper agronomy practices; notably planting quality seed, right spacing, seed population, fertilizers among others. For soybean using the hoe basin Climate Smart Agricultural technology a farmer plants 8-10 seeds in the hoe basin. The basin should be 35 cm long, 20 cm wide, 15 cm deep. With use of fertilizers and line spacing of 75 cm under good management, a farmer could yield up to 1500-3000 kg/hectare(600 kg-1200 kg/acre); giving a farmer income of up to Shs 1.2 million /acre; if the farmer planted, for example, the Maksoya variety. Where proper agronomy practices are not adopted, a farmer may lose up to 60% of expected yields. So let us adopt the right agronomy practices for better yields and incomes for the farmers.
